Where Can I Go Kayaking in Ontario?
As summer rapidly approaches, you may be looking to hit up some local spots to Kayak. With around 250,000 lakes in Ontario alone and over 100,000 kilometers of rivers, there are more than enough options to pick from. Below we list some spots to kayak to give you a few ideas of where to go this summer.
Rideau Canal
Rideau Canal is rich in history. The original purpose of it was to provide a safe and secure route for Montreal and the British Naval Base during the War of 1812. As a result of this, it is a hotspot for locals and tourists alike. Not only is it a popular skating spot during the winter season, it is just as popular during the summer. It is a great place to kayak and get a closer look at this historic site. From May through October, people are drawn to this site and kayaking is definitely one of the best ways to experience it. You can take the canal all the way down to Dow’s Lake which eventually feeds into the Rideau River.
Ottawa River
The Ottawa River is perfect for casual paddlers and adrenaline junkies alike. It is located on the northern border of Ontario and Quebec. Running from Lake Timiskaming all the way down to Lake of Two Mountains, it stretches 1,271 kilometers. It has both calm spots if you want to sit back and enjoy the scenery and whitewater rapids if you want to kick things up a notch and take the river head on. Don’t worry if you’re new to whitewater kayaking. There are several local businesses out there that can help you become a confident kayaker with just a few training sessions.
Grundy Lake
Located about 270km to the northwest of Toronto and just off the shoreline of the Georgian Bay, Grundy Lake is a beautiful option for kayaking and hiking. Being part of Grundy Provincial Park, there are also plenty of options for camping and cliff jumping.
